I watched NASCAR racing nearly every Sunday with my Dad in the '80s. It was one of the few sports we could bond over because he did not care for the other major sports like baseball or football. Dad's favorite driver was Darrell Waltrip and I was a fan of Dale Earnhardt. If you know those two drivers, you can imagine some of the heated moments we experienced on race day through the decade and into the '90s.
I'm always hunting for VHS tapes outside of the norm when I'm at local thrift stores or antique malls and a recent find is a tape that spotlights stories from four iconic "Winston Cup" drivers from the '80s and beyond. Close Calls interviews Richard Petty, Darrell Waltrip, Benny Parsons and Cale Yarborough who tell their most exciting experiences on the track along with footage from those moments. The video leads off with the Richard Petty talking about his spectacular crash at the 1988 Daytona 500.
Enjoy over 50 minutes of pure 1980s racing nostalgia with my recent VHS find, Close Calls!
