More information about the animated prequel series Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai has emerged from San Diego Comic Con this past weekend. Zach Galligan, the original star of Gremlins and Gremlins 2: The New Batch has now been added to the growing voice cast. He joins the previously announced Ming-Na Wen (The Book of Boba Fett), B.D. Wong (Jurassic Park/Jurassic World films), James Hong (Big Trouble in Little China), and Matthew Rhys (The Americans).
More cast members were also revealed at SDCC including Sandra Oh (Grey's Anatomy), Randall Park (WandaVision), Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live), and George Takei (Star Trek). According to Variety, the new animated series is set in 1920s Shanghai and will reveal the story of how naïve 10-year-old Sam Wing (the future mysterious Chinatown shopkeep Mr. Wing in the original live-action film), met the young Mogwai called Gizmo.
According to Gizmodo, San Diego Comic Con fans were also treated to a screening of the first episode Gremlins: Secret of the Mogwai. Lots of origin details were revealed including Gizmo in his original habitat, how Sam and Gizmo first meet, and the beginning of their journey. The series is slated for 10 episodes in its first season and is set for a 2023 release on both HBO Max and Cartoon Network.
